I think what you are describing is called a vertical monopoly.
Alas, it's probably the reason we won't see a Google service provider to use your Google phones with Google OS on.
People will pass off all sorts of extremist and radical arguments and laws with the excuse that it's for the children.
However, the one time we have a situation where there's actually a child being impacted here, they don't seem to care.

I've often had people come to my door and ask me about a newspaper subscription. I always told them no, because I can get all the news I want on the internet.

Why doesn't the government try a utility based internet service while also competing with the private sector? You could get your cheap internet utility or opt for the faster business service providers?
When you work in the IT field you tend to see how ignorant people really are towards computers.
It doesn't strike me unusual at all that people are freaking out about nothing. It seems most people can't tell the difference between Windows and Office or disk space and memory. All you need to do is make up a situation where there could be a problem that threatens them, mix in a few PC terms and bam, instant fear.
It's kind of like PC Madlibs.
