Kinda like vinyl & CDs are still around and people like to have them even though they could totally just download the music for next to no cost anyhow?
Hard-drives cost money, thus the disk space costs.
electricity to run the computer costs money, thus copying has costs,
bandwidth costs money, thus distribution costs.
The thing is, the relative cost is next to nothing--but most certainly it is not free.
A thought:
Somebody goes to court claiming to have a copyright on breathing, and wishes the court to issue a "preliminary injunction" against various lawyers and executives in the MAFIAA who have been witnessed to be breathing.
If it's found later, after a year or 2 in the courts, that the copyright on breathing then said persons may resume breathing--if they're still able.
As a person who does software/firmware/hardware development across systems which span from 4MHz hard-coded microprocessors on up to local & server computers, I can tell you Windows is acceptable only in the little niche where they've been working hard to drive out everybody else.
They live in the corner, scared of all competition.
And, it doesn't play well with pretty much anything.
In kindergarten--a game called telephone (or "Chinese Whispers" for the racists)?
The kids would all line up, and the teacher would whisper to the first child something like "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" and each child would pass along the message, until it got to the end, and the last child would repeat loudly the message received, usually "I'm hungry" or "I gotta pee".
This reminds me mightily of that--we've all known for a very long time how rumors travel and grow.
I heard a rumor from an allegedly reliable source that the Googster totes has a couple Ninja Attorneys on retainer. If those guys(?) get the case, IVy-trollingston will not only lose, it will Quake (or is that Doom?) in fear!! (mwa-hahahahahah!)
OOh! AND perhaps they could get the damnable "open source" software legally defined as "pirated" software? (says the BSA apprentice, half skulking in the dark shadows)

Not Likely
As a result, it's pretty natural they'd be completely out of touch with their user-base.

Re: Duh
That's because a donated support contract costs WAY more than a donated $0.50 dvd with an alleged 'Operating System' on it.

Try a little harder, eh?
Nuance, subtlety, the correct mix of confused dignity, righteous anger, and certitude--these things are required to master "Trolling".
Keep at, you'll get, but you need practice!
