"How much corruption is there in our current court systems?"
a: An incalculable amount.
I personally feel this is the root cause of most if not all our problems.
It isn't corruption like taking bribes etc...(although I wouldn't be surprised to find out that also takes place) but the corruption of the values of the individual judges. They are more concerned with establishing themselves and setting precedents than with justice.
I always mark no on the ballot for retaining judges, it is a futile gesture but I live with the disillusionment that they will look at the paper and see someone was unhappy.
"Surely, someone somewhere along the way must have explained copyright law to him, right? "
Is that even possible?
"I'm a bit surprised Erickson's lawyers didn't talk him out of this."
He waved money in font of them...
What would be good but probably won't happen is for the judge to send him and his attorney running for cover. But I fear the the Judge will play along with the charade
I've had both kinds of professors.
Neither would accept a citation from Wikipedia.
The ones that seemed most concerned with learning would tell you to look there and branch out and to use your critical thinking skills.
The ones that ran the classroom like their own little kingdom would spend 10 minutes the first class explaining how Wikipedia was comparable to a comic book only not as accurate.
The fear shown by the second group is not unlike the industries that are frequently discussed here on techdirt.
Re: The problem with inferior people like Pistole...
I disagree, it isn't inferior minds that causes this. I think it is the motivation behind them that drives them, greed and a lust for power.
I've been around people with a low IQ, in my experience they would see the obvious fact that this doesn't work, they probably couldn't give you a reason why but they could tell you it is wrong.
Give the young hipster a projector and surround sound set up, hook up a couple gaming consoles, the time delay for Netflix become trivial. The friends will wait to watch it or they all go to the dollar theater.

Staring Mel Gibson as AJ the freshly minted lawyer.
An epic tale of good against evil.
You'll pay for your seat but you won't need it as this film will have you on your feet cheering throughout.
This film has not been rated.

I'm convinced that people are. As computers have become easier to use people know less about them.
Just like automobiles most people can no longer even replace a flat tire, heaven forbid they should have to actually change a light bulb.
Computers are the same that is why big box stores can collect $200 to remove a virus on a $350 desktop tower.
People want to push the on button(or turn the key) and go.
There is no interest in how it works.
