Who Are You Talking to at these Expert Sites?
from the everyone's-an-expert dept
In the past few month there have been way too many of these new expert sites, and now the New York Times is taking a look at them. It seems that for most of them you don't need any credentials to start giving advice (should I make a joke here about parents? nahhhh...). The thing that has always bothered me about all of these sites is that the people I go to advice are people I know and trust, or who have been specifically recommended by people I know and trust. I don't have any faith in someone I meet through one of these expert sites.
Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I think the word expert was used so that users would know what the site is all about and doesn't always mean that the members are experts...
Opinions and information are valuable but must be taken with a grain of salt...

I guess the Times never heard about USENET...
USENET, even on topics where it doesn't break down into flames and noise, isn't really characterised by "experts." Oh, they're there for some groups, but generally the people you get help from are more or less on the same level as yourself.
