Scan This

from the virtual-shopping-list dept

Symbol Technologies plans on using its bar code scanning device and technology to cater to the dot coms. Basically a user can scan the bar code of (for example) a milk carton once all the milk is gone... In essence, the user would be creating a shopping list that could be uploaded to a dot com grocer. The implications of this device are huge and many dot coms are looking into using it.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I thought of this about 5 years ago

Using a newton. I rejected it as anal.

1.5 years ago, a company was going to provide comparitive shopping in real time with a palm...

So this is the logical extention.

And, unless it is free to the end-user you are gathering info aboute, no one will PAY money to do this...unless they like lotsa hi-tech toys.

    PlanetRX allows you to scan...

PlanetRX allows you to use the scanner to simly scan the stuff you have at home, and then order more of it from them... Again, it's a neat concept, but I think the cost of the scanner is a huge barrier to entry -- there's nothing on the site that says that PlanetRX will subsidize the cost, but that would make sense, eh?
