Cell Phone Spam

from the stupid-companies dept

A very stupid company in NJ figured out a way to send text messages to a large number of AT&T mobile phones, and thus spammed them interrupting and annoying many people. It's not hard to do. In fact, I'm surprised it hasn't happened before, and I wouldn't be surprised if it starts happening a lot more often. The company behind the spam (with a 22 year old CEO) doesn't think they did anything wrong, even though they bothered and interrupted a large number of people. Now, that's a stupid business. Bothering your potential customers doesn't seem like the smartest strategy...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    I have.....not done this.

This is PURE EVIL. Mr 22 year old should be shot [nothing life threating of course]. Ok, I have been posting for some time now....and I will come out and say it. I work for Darth Armstrong. I support AT&T systems...sorta. I have thought about this, I have a AT&T cell [imagine that] and I did not get a msg. It is not hard, even skytel.com can be spammed, just write a script [wont give directions on how] and spam via #. This is EVIL. I had [past tense] a efax.com #, but got too much spam. Again, find a 'bank' of numbers and go with it. Just plain lame. I cannot [beside passwd protect] figure out how to protect against this stuff. Ideas other TDers?
