Miramax to Put Feature Films Online

from the cool dept

Miramax has made a deal with SightSound to experiment with putting feature films online for download. They want to see if people will pay to download a feature film. I think it's pretty cool that such a major player would do this. Though, you know that it won't take long before someone cracks the protection scheme and the movies (or should I say "moviez") are available for free (via Gnutella or something similar) and Miramax and the media freak out. Still, it's a good first step.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    More Piracy.......

Piracy will go up [so will dollars].
I like the idea, but bandwidth is STILL an issue. Until we can 'realtime' request movies [dvd quality], it is just not worth it. They have a few sites that allow viewing of 'independent' movies, at like 18$ for a 30 min movie!!!! Insane, and they cannot be that good.
