No More Phone in the Desert

from the too-bad dept

I know I've spoken about the phone in the desert story here before, but here's an update. It seems that the National Parks Service has put an end to it by removing the phone. They say that there's now too much traffic to the phone (though there's no evidence of that).

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Strange...

Just months ago, I called the pay phone and an old man answered and stated that Pacific Bell had just finished servicing the phone. Apparently PacBell had repaired it since it was so damaged. So whoever gets this phone won't have the original, only a restoration.

P.S. - I asked the man about the indian fellow that would usually answer. He said he had left because his journey/vacation was over; whatever that meant.

Anyone else ever get an answer?

I'm starting to feel as if those who run the National Parks don't want visitors. As if visitors somehow spoil the landscape. They can't seem to stand the unwashed masses descending on their sacred ground.

Makes me wonder if the environmental movement is becoming quasi-religious.
