Was it Bad that Oracle Spied on Microsoft?

from the that-depends dept

I've been debating whether or not to post anything about this whole "Oracle spying on Microsoft" issue. Quick summary: Microsoft freaked out and screamed "conspiracy" when it discovered someone offered janitors at a "public advocacy" group money for their trash. The purchaser was apparently trying to establish ties of the group to Microsoft. Then there was news that the group doing the spying used to work for Microsoft themselves. Finally, yesterday, Oracle admitted to hiring the group for this particular spying job. Was this a bad thing? According to the following article, not at all. Apparently, what the group discovered was that these "public advocacy" groups really were fronts for Microsoft, and thus shouldn't be trusted. Let's face it, companies definitely do underhanded things, and if anyone were a poster child for such practices, it's Microsoft itself. So, to see them suddenly complaining seems a bit odd.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
