Has the Internet Lost its Soul?
from the or-have-we? dept
A very good article about whether or not the internet has lost its soul. With the growing commercialism and focus on things like IPOing, and "path to profitability" has the internet lost what it used to have? The article makes the point that it has not. The basis of the what makes the internet what it is is still the people and the fact that they can connect this way. I tend to agree with this. I also think that everyone who's worried that the internet has lost its soul should chill out. I talk to too many people who are bitter about the way the internet has changed. They often speak with a vengeance about the "evil people" who have moved in to "our" neighborhood. Sure, there are some people who have become silly and obsessed, but why waste time worrying about them? Use the internet for what makes you happy. Those people are miserable already. They don't need your help.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
