The Running Man - Updated for the Web and Reality TV

from the make-it-stop...-please! dept

Will this ever stop? The latest in "reality TV" style programming is "Reality Run" which seems like it's just a bad update on the horrible Arnold movie of the 80's: The Running Man. In Reality Run, there's is a "fugitive" who must run around Berlin for 24 days without getting caught. However, he has certain tasks to perform each day and must take photographs that are posted to the net. Viewers on the website can then email in suggestions on where the guy is and how to catch him. If the pursuer finds the runner using a tip, the tipster will get $10,000. It seems like each week we can announce that we've "reached a new low in reality programming". What's up for next week?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

This is not a new theme

UK television screened a (nearly) identical show several years ago. The contestants had tasks to achieve each week, and mailed video tapes of themselves to the TV studio every day.

The same tipster idea was there as well.
