Pre-Registering Domains That Do Not Exist

from the pre-cybersquatting dept

As ICANN still talks and talks and talks and plans about new domains, but has not yet officially decided anything, some companies are taking pre-registrations on domains that don't exist yet and may never exist. That's right, cybersquatters who don't want to miss out are taking a big risk in registering domain names that may never be approved by ICANN. Even if they are approved, it's not clear if these cybersquatters will get the domains. So, in the cases, where they're actually paying for pre-registration, it may be a complete waste. I can't wait for the lawsuits to start popping up.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

I think I temporarily lost my mind there. Hmmm.... I think late nights at the office had something to do with it.

    Re: MY COMPANY!!!!!!!!!

Oh, I should probably make it clear that my company has nothing to do with cyber squatters, we're just applying for a higher level domain and offering our other free services to users.
