Computers Predict Crowd Panic

Here's an article about computers being used to create models that predict how crowds panic. Apparently, they've done quite a good job. The part that I don't fully understand is how this is useful. They suggest in the article that this can give us some clues as to how to prevent dangerous situations occurring - but they're not exactly clear on what those preventitive measures are. It says something about a barrier, but that's about all.
