Websites That Talk To You

from the yet-another-reason-to-turn-off-your-speakers dept

According to this article, the next big thing is going to be websites that talk to you. We've discussed this before on Techdirt, and I think it's a horrible idea. I don't want my computer talking to me. If anything it will annoy me. However, according to the article, people think that consumers will really like it when web pages talk to them and will encourage them to spend more. Now... if a web page could understand me when I told it to "shut up"... that might be an interesting application.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Wait and see...

My gut reaction is computers should not talk. Mostly because I can only imagine the worst implementations of the technology. But sometimes I actually do wish my computer had better vocal abilities.... However, I have a suggestion: computers should speak only when spoken to --until they're mature enough to hold a good conversation. Call me old-fashioned, but I think computers that speak out of turn should be turned off w/o supper....
