Can Linux Come Out And Play?

from the Tit-OR-Tat dept

The best things in life are free, but usually you take them for granted and forget about them. That's apparently what happened at a conference held to tackle the digital divide. They totally forgot to invite anyone from the Linux community. To me, this is just another sign that the US can only handle two things at a time -- Coke/Pepsi, Gore/Bush, TastesGreat/LessFilling. Why don't we ever consider other alternatives?

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Other alternatives, indeed.

Why don't we ever consider other alternatives? Presumably for the same reason that computers that don't have Intel Inside weren't considered. They're out there, after all.

    You bitch about no alternatives

And all *YOU* do is list Linux.

    What about BSD?

I deserve that. As soon as I posted that story, I knew someone was going to call me on it. (And yet I didn't edit the post.) I think this just proves the high caliber of Techdirt readers.

And where was BeOS? And the OS/2 contingent? You're all a bunch of exclusionists.

    Alternatives

You list pairs, but are they alternatives?
Coke and pepsi? Both vile cola drinks.
Bush and Gore? Vile right wing politicians.

Only Americans can see any difference between them!!

OS/2 is almost dead. If you poke it with a stick, it moves.

If you are willing to include OS/2, what about NeXTSTEP?

Or how about THEOS, PICK, etc la?

If you are going to mention Open Source OSes and then only Linux, you are either:
    1) Clueless
    2) an ungrateful bastard. (why ungrateful? Linux uses parts out of the BSD OS source tree. Example of this 'tude is at LinuxWorld people walking up to the BSD booth and saying "What are YOU doing at OUR show". BSD code is good enuf to put in Linux, yet not good enuf to be mentioned when one talks about opensource OSes. Another example is read hat claiming they started the open source movement.)

Hey... um... calm down. Okay? It was all meant as a joke. If you want to get all religious about operating systems there are much better places to do that then here. We don't really care.

Well, at least 'Alternatives' is out-spoken. Ya gotta admire that.... As for being "clueless" or "an ungrateful bastard", I think I'm probably both at least _some_ of the time. But honestly, I know there are other operating systems out there. My point for posting that story was mostly just that Americans are in general narrow-minded. I salute 'Alternatives' for promoting some of his ilk.... And I agree OS/2 is dead. Or at least it won't be bridging any "digital divides" in the near future.

    Outspoken

    Yuppers...thats me. *grins*

I tend to swing towards de-emphising linux and mentioning BSD. But, I have said, and will continue to say that Linux works, and is a fine alternative choice to BSD. And that is a WHOLE lot more than BSD seems to get outta the Linux end of the world.

But there is *FAR* more hype towards linux....and the reason is simple economics. All 150+ linux distros (gotta install them all....linuxmon.) have thier pitch (wo)men out talking about Linux....oh, and our version BTW. BSD has *ONE* company making noise, (ok, Apple will make 2)

And that noise level results in statements like this one on the digital divide board...
    http://chat.digitaldividend.org:82/eshare/server?action=150&board=4&article=2
"Does anyone here know why Linux, the only solution third world people can actually afford, has been locked out of this conference?"

Linux is pitched as the **ONLY** solution. So, excuse me while I yell at the top of my digital lungs BSD. And tounge lash mhh5 for not mentiong BSD in the cover story post (lash, lash) I can provide salt if you wish to add that to the wounds :-)

Oh, and OS/2 copies....they will be used to fill the digital chasm so ppl can cross the digital divide :-)
