Making Online Sales In An Offline World

from the maybe-online-isn't-so-different dept

When Primedia put their Apartment Guide online they hired some new sales people to sell the advertising space. That didn't work. What is working is using their traditional sales team to sell additional ad space online as well as their regular sales. This makes sense to me. I don't see why people think that they need an entirely different set of people to sell online ad space as compared to paper catalog ad space. The regular reps already know the customers, and (more importantly) the company should be looking at their online division as an expansion of their offline business, rather than a totally new enterprise.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Getting it right

I think companies are finally starting to understand (I hope!) that the internet is just another channel for the business (not a seperate business). A lot of companies have wasted time seperating newly created e-business, the answer has always been to keep it integrated.
