Incubators Facing Hard Times?

from the oh-really? dept

I'm being particularly harsh on the NY Times today, but they have this article talking about how investors have cooled to the idea of internet incubators. Of course, most publications discussed this a few weeks back, but that's okay. What strikes me as odd about this is why no one mentions the fact that over the past two years, the press has been pumping up these incubators to the level of hype they're now being dragged down from? For a few years all anyone could talk about was what a great idea incubators were. They put more and more pressure on them to spin off more and more companies. What they forgot was that incubators are useful in creating good companies that need some extra infrastructure in place, but a bad company is still a bad company. There was so much encouragement that it seemed like these incubators just had to keep creating any company to keep the hype going. That's why it seems like a ton of incubating companies were definite "me too" plays, as opposed to something really creative.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
