Dell Hosting Service Having Problems

from the oops dept

It can't do much to build up customers' confidence in your webhosting ability when you can't even host your own website properly. The front of DellHost.com's website (Dell's web hosting service) is currently showing an error page and telling the "owner" to contact Interliant. I assume they'll fix it soon, so I took a screenshot.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Suspended?

I find that screenshot interesting. The title bar of the browser in that shot says "SUSPENDED". This seems to imply that someone did not pay their bill? heheh

      Re: Suspended?

I sent the following email to dellhost.com todays:

After spending more than a week and at least 25 phone calls, I am giving up. The problems are almost too many to bother describing, but I will highlight three:

      1. Domain Name Server problems prevented access to my site for more than two days after signing up and transferring my domain name. This was a local problem for Dell which a friend at my office diagnosed. Dell did nothing until I told them what the problem was.

      2. On March 12th, I called regarding a problem with FrontPage giving me a message that I was unable to delete a file. Trying it a second time worked. This was always the case when deleting a file - an error message and then it worked. The support person looked at my site and informed me that I was not allowed to have subwebs. This was unrelated to the problem I was having, but was far more critical, because my domain cannot be maintained without subwebs. I was transferred to Mike (ex 7026) who confirmed this and changed them to folders while I was on the phone leaving me to figure out how to now maintain a single large site at Dell from several separate webs in different parts of the country.

      3. A few hours later, access to my entire site was impossible. All access to my domain (even when using the temporary name) were redirected to the Dellhost.com home page. I was told it would be fixed in a few minutes. After two hours, I was told it was still being worked on. Three days later, it is still unavailable and still being worked on - or so I'm told.

Last night, I changed my domain name servers for all of my domains at Network Solutions to a new provider. Dell's web hosting indicates up front what services will be available it's only after trying to use common web site features that one finds out that Dell's service is not much more than what is available for free from thousands of ISPs. Buying a 100MB site is not something one needs for pictures of the kids. I expected a professionally hosted site and I got a toy - that didn't work and still doesn't. You cannot know how much this has cost me. It is outrageous to have a site down for three days with the associated lost revenue.

I expect a full refund of my setup fee and all other charges made. I also expect a reply to this email - something I did not get when I politely requested compensation for the initial unavailability of the domain.
