Degrees Earned Online Lack Status
from the well,-duh dept
Not a big surprise here, but many companies feel that degrees earned online are less trustworthy than degrees earned offline. I think that many people probably still associate online degrees with things like correspondence courses. The article points out that over time, it's likely that certain online universities will build more of a reputation, and lose the stigma. Anyone want a degree from Techdirt University?Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Maybe hiring practices should be changed....
While another said, "I would feel that I had been deceived if I found out the degree had been earned online if that wasn't stated on the resume."
I really have to disagree with that sentiment. I don't think it's dishonest at all. And if you're so concern but you can't recognize where a degree was earned, then you have bigger problems.

The Online Degree Discussion is Flawed
Examine all of the colleges listed here: http://www.elearners.com/colleges/ and tell me that the aformentioned colleges lack status.
Man, please! I think your argument revolves around the brand/reputation of the college and that is a totally different story.
