A Whole Whack Of Cable
from the gimme-my-high-speed-connections dept
Ryan writes "Two stories here - one Canadian and one American. Time Warner and EarthLink have just signed a major deal that will let EarthLink provide Internet access over Time Warner's up and coming cable systems. TW actually has numerous ISPs testing the system now in Columbus, Ohio, but EarthLink is the first major provider. North of the 49th (parallel, that is), the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is considering deeming high-speed internet access an essential service (regulating it). Even today, high speed costs a max of $50CDN (~$32US). Apparently, the two biggest providers aren't living up to all their promises, with outages lasting for hours, even days at times. Whether regulation will fix the problem is another question."Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Many digits
I'm starting to understand why the slashdot guys changed their names. It was probably for clarity (rather than a cool nerdy name as I first thought) as very few people can probably distinguish me from the other digital Ryan. Any other Ryan's out there?
