Another Pet Store Sells Out

from the wait,-wasn't-the-internet-supposed-to-revolutionize-pet-stores? dept

So, it was only yesterday that brick-and-mortar backed Petsmart bought the Pets.com domain name. Today, we find out that the one major remaining online pet store, Petopia, sold all its assets to Petco, another brick-and-mortar pet store, with whom it had been associated for the past year and a half. I guess, despite all the hype about how pet stores were going to be revolutionized on the web, no one actually thought to check with real live customers who are happy with their brick and mortar options. It's only been a year and a half since Petopia claimed they were going to win the online pet market simply because they'd raised more money.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    pets.com

just a comment from someone who's used pets.com... my purchasing strategy was to buy large quantities of food and cat litter whenever they did one of their sales (usually $10 off some min purchase). The one time I purchased toys / unfamiliar products, I received two cat toys that didn't work for me (1) was for dogs and for some stupid reason marketed to cats and the second (2) was poor quality and fell apart the same day I gave it to my cat. I loved the mail-order 20 lbs of food thing but I also just need to go to a store to get the extras...
