The Zen Of Palm
from the it's-all-about-the-simplicity dept
A good look into the mindset of the folks at Palm, based on what they were saying at a recent developers conference. The main point is that they're keeping the Palm simple. They won't add lots of flashy, but mostly useless, extra features like those that are found on many CE devices. This keeps the Palm small, light weight, and simple. They know that this may piss off some developers who want extra features, but they believe this gives them a huge advantage. Microsoft's whole culture is based on cramming more features into any product and not about making the product simple and easy to use. That's why they think people prefer the Palm. I'm not totally convinced that's true. I think Palm has done a much more effective advertising job, and the flashier CE devices seem to be catching on a little more. To be honest the Palm speech sounds eerily reminiscent of Netscape execs claiming that Microsoft "just doesn't get it" when it came to browsers.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
