Starting Education Online At An Early Age

from the does-it-help? dept

A look at some areas where "distance learning" is being used in K-12 education. While most people think of distance learning as a college-level idea, there are some applications for younger students. Many people feel it's helpful for children who are already being home-schooled, or for children with disabilities. Of course, the article only presents one side of this question. I've heard many people talk in the past why they think distance learning for younger students could be dangerous. I'm surprised the article doesn't have at least one quote from someone saying this is destroying the very fabric of our society.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Seen it

I saw this happening in my high school every day. I live in a city that's large for my province, and distance education was used to teach kids in grades 8-12 in many rural areas subjects that they wouldn't have otherwise been able to learn. I think it is a great idea, and the kids could even call in real-time with questions or answers. It allows students to tap resources that they definitely wouldn't have had otherwise.
