Internet Related Jobs Are Changing

from the well,-duh dept

A number of articles are pointing out that things are changing for workers in the internet world. First, we discover that the kid CEO may no longer be desirable. In fact, companies would prefer if you had a good mix of old and new economy experience. They even mention Joseph Galli who helped destroy the market value of two internet companies as being a person with "good job prospects". That seems a bit odd to me. While I do think that a broad background helps, the person also does need to understand the internet to really make things happen. Of course, at the same time, we discover that internet layoffs are happening at traditional companies too. Internet related layoffs aren't just for dot coms any more. Many traditional firms were bullied into believing they needed huge online staffs, when that wasn't necessarily the case. Of course, those traditional firms were run by these so-called "experienced" old economy folks, and they still messed up, so I'm not sure where that leaves us. Perhaps no one is a good manager in the new economy. We should all just work for ourselves.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
