Snooping Through Emails For Expertise

from the you've-got-expertise dept

When people talk about the corporations snooping through email they usually think they're looking for bad stuff. What if they're looking for expertise? More and more corporations are apparently using email snooping systems to find out who knows what. The article points out the limitations of most of these programs (they return a ton of false positives since they're simply based on keywords, with little to no "intelligence"). This is really just a different take on the whole "knowledge management" concept that people were so keen on a few years ago. Back then, they tried to implement systems where people would input their knowledge so others could find it. Those rarely worked well. I guess someone finally realized that people were already inputting their knowledge to emails. Of course, this still brings up a huge privacy issue, but I've already taken up too much space...

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    sounds like just the thing...

...the dsniff project's mailsnarf + htdig were invented for.

Of course, you should probably santize the headers and run forward and backward through
babblefish a couple of times to prevent any sort of political embarassment/blunder from
    becomming obvious.
