U.S. Not Dying For Wireless (Or Maybe They Are...)

from the doing-just-fine-watching,-thanks dept

With all the hype about how the US is missing out on the wireless revolution, the NY Times points out that we might not be missing very much. Yes, people buy cans of soda via their cell phones in Helsinki. Yes, in Korea you can follow your ovulation cycles. But, is anyone making any money? Many U.S. firms are willing to wait and see what happens. They're trying not to get drawn in on the same sort of hype that is destroying dot coms left and right. Of course, that didn't stop them from spending billions of dollars on spectrum, but I guess old habits die hard.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Money?

Why does everything have to come down to making money? Maybe wireless is a good idea on its own without the possibility of making obscene profits out of it? Maybe it has real social usefulness that means profit is irrelevant?

      Re: Money?

If it's valuable to society then some one should be willing to pay for it (after all that's currently how we differentiate between good things, i.e. services from bad ones which go bust!).
