The Collapse Of Versity.com
from the yet-another-dot-com-lessons-learned-story dept
These articles are getting to be way too common these days. Here's yet another lessons learned from the failure of a dot com. The story is about Versity.com, which was an online note taking service for students. The "interesting" part about the story is that they got bought by CollegeClub.com just as everything started going bad. Most of the empoloyees moved down to San Diego (where CollegeClub.com was located) only to find out that many of them were being laid off two weeks later. That's just stupidity on the part of CollegeClub for making the acquisition and not realizing they couldn't afford it. I also find it amusing that every single Versity.com employee talked about in the article is either 22 or 23 years old. Certainly gives you the feeling that there wasn't much in the way of adult supervision at the company.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
