Napster Analysis

from the good/bad? dept

Zakk writes "Larry Powers is an ex music lawyer who has an uncanny nose for the new media space. His writing is often perused by those in the biz, and is never less than interesting (if not controversial). This is his take on the Napster decision and the possible future scenarios." There are a ton of post Napster analysis articles out there. This one is interesting as it has a bit more of the lawyer point of view, but I'm not sure I agree with his conclusion. To even suggest that Napster might retain 25% of its customers when it switches to a subscription model is pretty laughable.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

He does say 2.5% is more likely

In the analysis the author does mention the much more realistic figure of 2.5%. The $20/mo fee he mentions is too high to be accepted however.
