Open Sourcing Usenet

from the it's-about-time dept

In response to the Google takeover of Deja, some folks are trying to open source usenet and have asked Google to donate the archives and old Deja code. It will be interesting to see how this works out.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Knobs.

    UseNet *WAS* and *IS* OpenSource.

It is only the newbies who don't understand that.....in the time before browsers you:

    1) Downloaded the code for the server and reader
    2) compiled the server/reader
    3) got a newsfeed.

    it looks open to me.

    What's not open?

I don't see the big deal ... I've been using usenet for about 15 years now. I've poked my head into DejaNews once or twice and didn't really like the web interface for reading usenet posts. Who cares if they got bought or go under. Usenet was around before http and it's not going anywhere unless ISPs stop hosting servers and recieving/sending feeds. As far as I can see Deja was only a minor player in usenet and they didn't have a sound buisiness model so they dissappeared. so now no web interface, big deal. Try using TIN over a 2400 kbps SLIP dialup and manually merging and UUdecoding your binaries (I know deja didn't do binaries ... that's why they sucked) then downloading them using Zmodem. Deja gone ... good riddance. the glory days of usenet were over 10 years ago anyway.
