Napster Hurts CD Sales

from the Stupid-arguments dept

So if you haven't had enough Napster news and discussion, here's another article on how the music industry is trying to protect their intellectual property. They're saying that Napster has done "irreparable harm" since their singles sales have fallen 39% last year. Greed is so unbecoming....

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Single Sales?

What a joke. Who the hell buys singles anyway? I don't think this is indicative of very much. How much revenue did they lose from this "drop" in the sale of singles? Single sales have been dropping for years. They're simply not popular, nor have they been for a long time. I don't see how that implicates Napster in any way.

    Re: Single Sales?

I agree. I always thought singles were a money grab anyway - four songs for $10. Though, after thinking about it, I think Napster did 'hurt' the singles market - people just went and downloaded the one song they wanted instead of buying it on an expensive disc with nothing on it. I think, though, the best quote is at the end of the story:

``To be honest, it wasn't a great music year,'' said Andreas Schmidt, chief of the e-commerce group at Bertelsmann, which has a financial stake in Napster. ``There were some isolated events, but we didn't put that much good stuff out.''

    I agree.

    From the convienently-missing-information-dept

Album sales, which of course dwarf single sales, increased 3-4% last year.

Napster works a hell of a lot better to get a single track or two than it does to grab an entire album, so these numbers are no surprise.
