New.net Launching
from the the-excitement-never-ends dept
Idealab is finally launching their New.net service, about which there have been a number of rumors in the past few weeks. The basic system is a new domain naming system that will allow people to register all sorts of new top level domains (well beyond the ones that ICANN took years to approve). The idea is to do that by creating a small plugin for your browser that will check on those domains. It's a pretty creative solution actually, but I wonder if it will actually catch on. How do you explain to the people who don't have the plugin why they can't get to a site? Who's going to buy a site that most of the people on the internet can't get to? I think there's a chicken and egg problem going on. Plus, the system isn't designed to deal with trademark violations, so some companies are not happy about it.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
