Major League Baseball To Charge To Hear Game Broadcasts
from the say-what? dept
Major League Baseball has apparently decided to charge users to listen to baseball games via the internet this year. As someone who listened to probably 60 to 70% of the last two years' Yankees games on the web, I'm a bit surprised. However, it is fairly inexpensive ($10 for the whole season). Of course, if they're charging, the least they can do is let you have the choice of listening to whichever set of broadcasters you want. As it currently stands, they only offer the home team's broadcasters - so half of the time you have to listen to broadcasters you don't like. Of course, Yankees games are broadcast in NY on WABC - which also rebroadcasts on the web. I'm not sure how Major League Baseball would prevent fans from just going straight to the local radio station broadcast.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
