Comparing Napster To The Early Days Of Radio

from the sounds-familiar dept

An interesting column that looks at the early days of radio that make it sound quite a bit like Napster. The music industry was pissed off at the idea of radio and afraid that they weren't going to get any royalties from songs broadcast over it. The radio people said it would stimulate growth for sheet music and record sales. The article even suggests that the birth of rock-n-roll was caused by radio stations refusing to pay ASCAP fees, and thus focusing on lesser known acts where they didn't have those problems. Thus, perhaps Napster will begin a new form of American music once all the plastic music clones supported by the industry have been yanked off of Napster.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    American music?

Why should it be American music? Why not from somewhere else. Given the US capitalists' grip on
the music industry it seems much more likely that it would come from somewhere else.
