How PVRs Will Change Television Advertising

from the product-placements-everywhere dept

With more and more people buying PVRs (personal video recorders, like Tivo or Ultimate TV) here's a look at what might happen to television advertising. The writer says that PVRs might really mean the death of the typical commercial, and then looks to the internet for ideas on where advertising revenue can come from. He mentions CBS Marketwatch's new "Budweiser" backgrounds and other more intrusive advertising methods to suggest that product placement or other new intrusive methods of advertising will force their way onto the television.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    What's a PVR?

So many of these 'tech-news' web sites erroneously assume their readership is as technically adept as they are. Sorry, a lot of us, even those of use who read slashdot daily, don't know what all the jillions of acronyms mean. So what's a PVR?

      Re: What's a PVR?

Um. Okay. Sorry. A few people have complained. I usually try not to do things like that. It's a "Personal Video Recorder" like a Tivo. I'll go correct it now...
