The Death Of Cityspree
from the something's-not-right-here dept
News.com has an article about the impending failure of Cityspree, which is apparently a company that prints out gift certificates to restaurants and sells them online. They consider this to be the perfect internet business. I'm not convinced of this. Question number 1: why can't a restaurant just do this on their own? The main problem that Cityspree had (and the reason why many restaurants now won't honor the gift certificates) is that they flooded the market. When everyone coming to a restaurant has the certificate, it's no surprise the restaurant would get upset. If they did it themselves, though, they'd have control over how many went out. Second question is how in the world would you need 250 people to work at a company that does this? It seems like you could easily get by with 10.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
