IM Becoming An Information Tool

from the next-generation-instant-messaging dept

A good look over at News.com at things such as ActiveBuddy that will make instant messaging a information tool going beyond just being able to chat with your friends. There's been a lot of talk lately of using instant messaging as a platform for things beyond chat, so it will be interesting to see what comes of it. Of course, there are still plenty of questions about IM standards.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Bogus!

Using IM as an information tool is an entirely bogus idea! What the hell are web servers for? OK, the web is too slow now because of all the load on it, but what makes people think tath IM wont go the same way?

File under stupid and pointless ideas.

    Re: Bogus!

Call me crazy, but I agree that IM is not the best means of communication for *real* information. Sure, it's a nifty thing to have when the bandwidth is tight, but once we all have flying cars and are videoconferencing constantly, no one will remember what IM stands for.... :P
