BlackBerry As The Heroin Of Mobile Computing

from the crackberry dept

USA Today has discovered BlackBerry email pagers. The article is amusing, though, as they have some funny quotes from people addicted to theirs. Andy Grove even claims that it should be reported to the Drug Enforcement Agency because it's addictive. Bob Ratliffe is quoted as saying, "I get in trouble for taking it to bed with me. Does that tell you how much I love it? I'm not sure how I lived without it." The article also talks about future BlackBerry plans. They basically see the device as a remote control for your computer. It's a good idea - depending on the implementation.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Remote control for a computer with a blackberry?

I use a blackberry. Although it's a pretty good tool for getting email anytime on the road without having to open a laptop and "borrow" someones wifi connection using an unsecured AP or using broadband wireless, I am certainly not addicted. I don't know why or how this happens to people - it's nuts. There are better models than ths one I have I'm sure. The model I have is not bad as far as screen size and color. It's one of the features I like, however, remote control of a desktop pc through the blackberry - I just don't see that working out well. I can't even run java scripts on web sites. My blackberry may need a serious upgrade but the screen size alone tells me that remote control a computer system might turn out to be a little painfull but may find it's use as an emergency method for accessing a computer.
