How A Small Group Forced Yahoo To Remove Porn

from the our-mixed-up-priorities dept

Salon has an in-depth story about the "uproar" that caused Yahoo! to remove porn from their site. Apparently, a lot of the pressure came from the American Family Association who see the "mainstreaming of porn" on Yahoo! as a huge evil. Of course, I wonder why they didn't say anything two years ago when Yahoo! actually started selling porn. I also find the story amusing because it describes how the legal counsel for the American Family Association went on Yahoo and found all sorts of porn. This guy must see so much porn. If porn really messes you up as badly as these guys want us to believe, that they must be pretty messed up themselves. The article also has some good quotes from the bigger players in the porn industry saying they like it when the AFA takes on Yahoo! because that keeps porn as an "underground" thing, increasing demand, while taking away more mainstream competitors.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
