Wireless Web Vs. Reality

from the what's-going-on dept

MIT's Technology Review has a very informative article explaining the state of wireless web access these days. There's not much new here if you follow this stuff closely already, but it is a good review, or intro if you're trying to catch up. They describe the differences (and blurring boundaries) between 2.5G and 3G, and why companies keep changing their minds. The main questions seem to revolve around the costs of setting up the infrastructure as well as the actual customer demand for any of these services. Of course, customer demand is always difficult to determine when you're asking whether or not they'd use something that they don't fully realize what it will do. Of course, that doesn't mean people will want to use it - just that they might not realize how they would use it. That doesn't make life easy for the carriers trying to put together a wireless plan, however.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
