Information Has Been Free All Along

This one is from a couple of days ago, but I missed it then, and it's worth posting. It's Michael Kinsley (from Slate) explaining some of his thoughts on the economics of information. People recently have been laughing at the idea of dot coms who give away content for free - but the fact is content has been given away free for years. He talks about how the TV show Nightline called him up and wanted to know how he ever planned to make money on Slate without charging - and he countered by asking how many "subscribing customers" Nightline has. There are ways to make money off of free content. The trick is figuring out how such a business model can work on the web.
