Wireless Check In For Flights

from the getting-even-better dept

Yesterday, for the first time, I used a "self check in" kiosk at an airport. It worked great, and was much better than standing in line to talk to an unfriendly desk person. But, some companies are already working on systems to improve the self-check in process - including one that involves your mobile phone. I've actually been following this system for a while and it could be pretty cool. They're now testing the system on Lufthansa flights in Germany. The article linked here doesn't do the best job describing the system, but basically when you walk into the airport, you call a certain number on your mobile phone. Using voice verification you prove who you are, and answer the basic questions. Then it tells you what gate you're at, and sends a WAP-based bar code to your phone. At the gate, there's a scanner that can read the barcode, and you just hold your phone up to the scanner - and it acts as your boarding pass. In other words, no standing in line except to actually get on the plane.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
