Pet Dot Com Post Mortem

from the dead-dead-dead dept

Well, it seems a little late for this sort of article, but it's a review of everything that went wrong in the pet dot com space. There are some pretty funny quotes - mostly from people who were involved in the pet space and who don't want to comment at all. I have no sympathy for these people. Back in mid-1999, before this whole mess crashed and burned, we at Techdirt pointed out how stupid all these pet stores were. Specifically, I have absolutely no sympathy for the woman from Petopia who claimed their "competitive advantage" was simply that they had raised more money. Of course, that advantage barely lasted a month. In this article she complains that she was "burned by reporters" and she didn't think that anyone cared about the pet space. She's wrong. I care that people remember how stupid a bunch of people acted when they thought they were smarter than everyone else.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
