My High School Friend, The Ex-Internet Billionaire
from the fifteen-minutes-of-obscene-wealth dept
A very well written and interesting article in Fortune magazine about the writer's high school friend, who for a brief time was an internet billionaire but is no where near that any more. This isn't a typical "here's a guy who made a lot of money and lost it" story. Since the writer was friends with the guy, it's much more sympathetic (but doesn't shy away from some of the guy's negative points). It also talks about other horrible things that happened during this time (the guy's mother died after an accident at his new $3 million house). With all the fun everyone has been having lately making fun of dot coms that have gone bust, this article is a good reminder that even among those top execs who made ridiculous sums of money, we're talking about human beings.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
