Microsoft Drops Smart Tags In IE... For Now

Microsoft, responding to public outcry about their lame smart tags technology has announced that they're going to drop it from the Windows XP release this fall. However, it will remain in Office XP, and may not be gone for good from IE. Of course, reading the details of smart tags, I really don't think it's that big of a deal. I'm glad they won't be in there, but to be honest, I wish instead there were more of a public outcry about the ridiculous use of a configuration detector which can cut you off from your software if you make any changes to your computer. For the conspiracy theorists among you, feel free to run with the idea that they floated the whole smart tags thing out there as a diversionary tactic to get the locking feature through. I'm sure it's not true, but it sure sounds like the type of thing that the vehemently anti-Microsoft folks might like...
