Removing Microsoft From Your Life

from the take-a-stand dept

The SJ Merc's Dan Gillmor has decided that he's so sick of Microsoft that he's going to try to remove them as much as possible from his life. Now, I know for a lot of techies, that's not such a big deal. But, for a journalist, that is still pretty big. I'd be interested to see how well it works out for him. Of course, he's not going to totally get rid of Microsoft. He needs Outlook apparently to do email at work. He's decided however, that he won't put Windows XP on his machine because of the ridiculous copy protection scam MS is running. As I said, lots of techies live without Microsoft, but it will be interesting to see if a plain old journalist can survive very long without them. Also, it will be more interesting to see if others start to follow suit.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    Ironic Apple

Its ironic that he cites Apple and the Mac as good causes because you don't like Microsoft. Apple's hardware prices have always been higher, as policy, and the resultant small volume of sales means the software costs more.
