New Take On Banning Cell Phones

from the is-this-better? dept

Second story of the day about driver distractions. New Hampshire is looking at a law that doesn't ban cell phones in cars, but does hold drivers accountable for driver distractions only if they cause an accident. I think this is a better approach than an outright ban, though I'm sure some people will say that this is more punitive after-the-fact punishment, rather than a prevention measure.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Enforce the laws already on the books...

This is just like all the other 'creeping nanny-ism' laws. Legislating for the purpose of behavior modification. It hasn't worked for the others and it won't work here.

What's next, laws against your thoughts?

    KISS

As mentioned in a previous post, in the UK we have a law that requires you to have two hands on the wheel. With such a simple law, we don't need to keep updating it when new distractions come along. ie the advent of the mobile didn't cause any new problems, it's still illegal to use whilst driving.
