Fly On The Wall At A Band Of Angels Meeting

from the cream-of-the-crop dept

A NY Times article (you know what that means) about the Band of Angels, who remain Silicon Valley's most prestigious angel investing group (though for a little while there Angel Investors LLC got all the attention, until the market went south and suddenly it looked like most of their investments were worth nothing). I've seen Fred Hoar and Hans Severiens (the guys in charge of Band of Angels) speak multiple times, and they're always entertaining. So, it's no surprise that the article is quite interesting as well. Every month, the Band gets together whichever of the Angels feel like going and watch three 20 minute pitches from entrepreneurs (and it's not easy to get on the list). The folks in the Band of Angels aren't rich dot commers, but generally people who've been around a lot longer. People who made their money in semiconductors, as well as a number of doctors. The most amusing point is when one of them whispers "who would trust someone with a haircut like that?" concerning one of the CEOs with a nearly shaved head. This is not the Silicon Valley that everyone was talking about a year ago - but this (perhaps) is more indicative of the real Silicon Valley.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.
