IBM Works On Virtual Passenger
from the Bozo-the-clown-in-your-dashboard dept
IBM is working on the next in car computer that is designed to keep drivers from falling asleep in their cars. The system will monitor the driver and ask him or her questions and monitor their answers. If it seems like there's a risk of the driver falling asleep, the computer will roll down windows, change the radio station or make a buzzing sound. If things get really desperate it will start to tell jokes or squirt the driver with water. Yes, that's right, IBM wants to put Bozo the clown in your dashboard to keep you awake. I can't wait for the first HAL-style problems. "Dave, don't fall asleep on me Dave... Dave, you seem like you're falling asleep." *squirt*Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

And if you're really tired...
I do think that something like this is a great idea though. A lot of accidents are caused by people falling asleep at the wheel, and while the best prevention is just them getting enough sleep, and this won't stop the accidents, it may help reduce them.
