Isn't It Cheaper To Give It Away?
from the not-really-the-point,-I-guess dept
Forbes takes a look at some of the new plans to charge for content, such as Inside.com's plan to charge $0.40 per article read - and points out (correctly) that the transaction system itself makes it cheaper to just give the content away. First there's the issue of setting up the transaction system, which can be a pretty steep upfront cost. Than the per transaction costs can run pretty high (often much higher than the cost of a single article) meaning that each time you buy an article at one of these sites, you're making the company lose a lot more money than if they'd just given it away for free.Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.
Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.
While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

Of course, the real problem is that 40 cents per article is way too expensive. How much is that newspaper, again?
