Yahoo Doing Stuff They Already Do

from the have-I-been-living-in-the-future? dept

Two stories on News.com about things happening at Yahoo. However, both are confusing to me, because neither one is actually new. First they said that (oh my!) Yahoo has joined the crowd of moronic desperate content sites and is now serving up pop under ads to annoy you. That's interesting, but I've been getting pop ups from Yahoo (at Yahoo Sports) for at least two weeks (and probably longer) already. Then they talk about how Yahoo is going to launch Yahoo PayDirect in the United States in a few months (basically it's Yahoo's PayPal copy). Problem is I've been using Yahoo PayDirect for months already, so I'm not clear what the excitement is.

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

yahoo pay direct has been around for awhile, but the news is that yahoo and hsbc announced an agreement this week that will expand services available to people who use pay direct. but i don't think either company has said exactly what will come out of the agreement.
